Feedback from one of the facilitated discussions at the CSP Spring Networking Forum in May 2019, was the possibility of creating, maintaining and providing to every HHFT cancer patient, a Cancer Patients Handbook containing information for patients, their families and carers.
There is a wealth of information online for patients, families and carers, but everyone agreed that the information was often difficult to find and this resulted in additional stress and worry at an already traumatic time.
Since the initial concept of an A5 paper folder which had already been used but for which funding from a local charity had ceased, the use and benefits of technology have become more apparent, but there is also still a need for written matter for some patients.
The idea of a plastic zip-top A3 wallet as already used in Maternity Services was agreed upon, where patients may retain copies of their own medical treatment records and any correspondence, which they can take along to every appointment. Information about local support groups and charity assistance could also be inserted into the wallets by Clinical staff.
