History of Cancer Services Partnership

Cancer Services Partnership (CSP) is an unregistered small charity run by and for, people affected by cancer.

It was established in 2003 by the then Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital to meet an NHS requirement to involve cancer patients in NHS care.

It consisted of cancer patients, their families, carers, and health professionals, with the aim of working together to improve the quality of local cancer services. It was run by NHH Lead Cancer Nurse and was supported by NHH. In 2009 it was suggested that one of the group members become chairperson and one was duly appointed. From then on it was a patient led group and CSP started to make a difference.

The group trained for and attended Peer Reviews, organised ‘Just You’ sessions which provided complimentary therapy and workshops for patients and families, carried out reviews of facilities, campaigned for free car parking for cancer patients, and much more.

In January 2012, as a result of the integration of Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust and Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare Trust, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) was created. It runs Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. CSP adapted and became inclusive of all the HHFT sites.

Moving forward in 2015/6, HHFT removed the Lead Cancer Nurse role and the CSP became an independent group with no funding. The Terms of Reference (ToR) was amended and in May 2016 a Treasurer was appointed. Initial funding was received from Macmillan Cancer Support Charity for the group to begin promoting itself whilst remaining in a close working relationship with HHFT.

It was then agreed to invite cancer support groups to join the Bi-monthly meetings in 2018 and the first support groups networking Forum was also held in Autumn 2018.

The CSP became more formalised and had its first AGM in 2019, with the election of a Secretary.

Two further Networking Forums were successful hosted by CSP and Macmillan Cancer Support in the Spring and Autumn of 2019.

CSP Bi-monthly meetings which are currently held at Basingstoke, are well supported by HHFT cancer Clinical Matrons and the newly appointed HHFT Lead Cancer Nurse. The meetings also have regular visits from members of the HHFT Cancer Services team who provide informative updates.

The CSP has always supported Hampshire Hospitals and will continue to do so with Co-Production at its heart.
